On the 25th September 2015, Robin Garton tragically died whilst on a solo hike in the Stob Coire nam Beith area of Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands. Sadly, he fell and died instantly whilst on a scrambling route.
His body was found by members of the public on 1st June 2016, over 8 months after Robin was reported as missing. The dedication and bravery shown by all members of the mountain rescue teams involved in the search has been truly humbling, and we sincerely thank them.
Robin was a generous, kind, and enthusiastic individual, and was respected and liked by those who met him. His passion to help those less fortunate than himself was typified by his diligent work for the Nepal based charity he founded in 2008, The Glacier Trust. His uncanny ability to convert this kind-natured enthusiasm into donations to help those most in need was inspiring and has, and still does benefit poor, remote, mountain communities of Nepal.
To continue the excellent work of Robin's charity, any donations made to the Robin Garton Memorial Fund will be funneled directly into the continuing work at The Glacier Trust. The aim of the charity is to enable vulnerable, remote, mountainous communities in Nepal to adapt to climate change by providing the education and materials needed to make necessary changes. The Glacier Trust has had many success stories including:
1. building irrigation canals and water storage ponds which have enabled families to grow enough food for the whole year;
2. installing improved cooking stoves that have drastically reduced: firstly, respiratory diseases that resulted from using traditional open hearth fires; and secondly, deforestation and environmental degradation of the surrounding area, as the new stoves use between 40-50% less wood which is taken from the surrounding forests;
3. educating the poorest farmers in sustainable agricultural techniques that not only preserve the environment on which the farmers depend, but also offers a monetary incentive through the ability to grow and sell cash crops at market;
4. sponsoring Nepalese master's students at universities in Nepal, who will benefit academically from conducting their research within some of the The Glacier Trust's target communities. This also benefits The Glacier Trust by gaining an academic perspective on the projects, which is invaluable and can help influence policy further down the line.
